Science chapter 5 Flashcards
What is the difference between weight and mass?
Mass is the amount of matter, weight is the force due to gravity on that matter
Example: Imagine a block of wood on Earth and on the Moon. Its mass will be the same on both planets, but its weight will be less on the Moon due to weaker gravity.
Define “mass”
measure of how much matter is present in a substance
What is the difference between volume and mass?
Volume: measured in cubic units like cubic meters (m³) indicating the three-dimensional space filled by an object.
Mass: measured in kilograms (kg), representing the total amount of matter in an object.
Example: A large balloon may have a big volume due to the air it holds, but its mass could be very small because air is not dense.
What is the law of “Conservation of mass”?
The mass of all reactants must equal the mass of all products.
Matter can’t be created or destroyed.
What is a “covalent bond”?
Bond formed by sharing electons
What is an “ionic bond”?
Bond formed by transferring electrons
What is a “bond”
Chemical attraction that holds atoms together as a compound.
What does the subscript represent in a chemical equation?
H20
The number of that specific type of atom
Two H in this case
What does the coefficient represent?
2H20
The number of molecules
Two water molecules in this case
What does the number on the top right of an element on the periodic table represent?
Atomic number: number of protons unique to that element
What does the number on the bottom of an element on the periodic table represent?
Atomic mass: average mass of protons and neutrons (in atomic mass units)
Balance:
____ N2 + ____ H2 –> ____ NH3
2 NH3
