Science - Biology Flashcards
Diffusion
The process where an area of highly concentrated particles filters through a semi-permeable wall to an area of low concentration.
Cellular respiration
The process of which cells use to create energy using glucose and oxygen with a bi-product of carbon dioxide and water
- C6H12O6 + O2 = H2O + CO2 + ATP
SA:V
The ratio explains the relationship between the surface area and volume and is usually modelled with a cube
- As a rule of thumb, the volume increases at a faster rate with the constant between their direct proportion being 6/side = SA: 6/s * V
- So as the side length increases, the ratio between SA:V decreases
- As a result, in biological terms the bigger a cell is the smaller the the ratio and because it requires diffusion to function and diffusion requires a high SA:V, the cell needs to be small
