science and religion. Flashcards

Q

miracles

A

d.Hume says that they go against the natural order of creation and the laws of physics he takes an Newtonian approach laws of physics are unchanging.
said that miracles are often proposed by barbarous people.

-spinoza says that miracles also challenge the laws of nature. and they cant be violated as the means that there is no basis for science.

-flew says more time and effort should be taken finding out what has happened not assume it was god or a miraculous event.

Q

religion vs education.

A

John scopes trial.
teaching anything other than the bibles genesis story was not allowed so John scopes a teacher taught out of a textbook with the theory of evolution in it then encourages students to testify against him so that he could take it to court.
separation vs church and state.
was fined 100 dollars. but was alter acquitted on technical faults.
divisions in the church and state in education who ruled it.

Q

intelligent design

A

goes agains the idea of evolution
the world is too fine tuned to be the product of blind evolution or pure chance.
dakins on trial book Behe says things like blood clots when we get cuts cant be pure chance and the eye is too irreducible complex to be accident had to have a creator we are able to see this with bacterium fagellum.

Q

criticisms to intelligent design.

A

based on theistic principles means that it could be accused of making presumptions.

there is no peer reviewed works or writings on this means the discovery institute says that there is but many suggest that those writings push theistic views.

Q

creationism (genesis story literally)

A

Philo of Alexandria says that they need to be taken not literally.

the discovery of fossils challenge the age of the earth according to the bible count as evidence against god.

however it’s not the traditional view to take the genesis story literally but analogically.

Henri blocker says that why should we tie god to one method of creation god could be responsible for natural selection ect.

Q

limits of scientific materialism.

A

cant investigates miracles beyond the laws on nature.
science cant prove that miracles didnt occur.
