Science Flashcards
Biofilm
Any group of microorganisms where cells stick to each other on a surface. Often encased in a “slime” or film called Extracellular Polymeric Substance (EPS). Can form on living and non living surfaces.
GI tract
Mouth-esophagus-stomach-small intestine (duodenum, jejunum, and Ileum)-large intestine (also called colon)-rectum-anus.
Duodenum
1st part of the small intestine. Connects to the stomach. Receives the liquified contents of the stomach. The most digestion occurs in this part of the small intestine. Liver and gallbladder deliver bile to the duodenum. The wall of the duodenum is in-folded and resembles the teeth of a comb or brush. This brush boarder increases surface area and releases enzymes to break down food.
Liver
Produces bile and stores fats, carbs and sugar. Has multiple ducts for the passage of bile to the gallbladder which is a pouch that stores bile. Eventually the gallbladder contracts and releases bile back through a duct and into the duodenum. Bile passed down through the rest of the small intestine and is absorbed in the ilium.
