Science Flashcards
What are the 3 stages of the cell cycle?
Interphase, mitosis and cytokinesis
what are the four phases of mitosis?
prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telephase
what happens in interphase?
- grows to mature size
- DNA is copied
- new organelles form
-prepares to divide
what happens in prophase?
-chromatin condenses to form chromosomes
-spindle fibers form
-nuclear membrane breaks down
what happens in metaphase?
-chromosomes line up in the middle
-spindle fibers attach to the centromere
what happens in anaphase?
-centromeres split
-chromatids separate and are pulled apart to opposite ends of cell
what happens in telophase?
-new nuclear membrane forms around each set of chromosomes
-chromosomes unwind into chromatin
what happens in cytokinesis?
-cell membrane pinches in the middle of the cell
-two cells are formed with identical chromosomes
what is mitosis
stage when cell’s nucleus divides into two new nuclei
