List 5 foods that are Carbohydrates.
Bread, Rice, Potatos, Wheat and Pasta (Filippo Pasta)
Name 3 consequences of an unhealthy diet.
Type 2 Diabetes ; Obesity ; Anorexia ; Heart Disease ; Hyper Tension
What is Type 2 diabetes?
Type 2 diabetes is where the pancreas makes less insulin than used to so the body becomes resistant to insulin.
What are the symptons of Type 2 Diabetes
The symptoms are thirst, passing urine often,
tiredness, weight loss and blurred vision
What are the treatments for Type 2 Diabetes
There are no treatments.
What is heart disease?
Heart disease is a range of disease that occur in the circulatory system. The causes are high blood pressure, smoking, an unhealthy diet, and physical inactivity.
What are the syptoms of heart disease?
The symptoms are chest pain, short breath, neck pain and numbness or coldness in limbs.
What is the treatments for heart disease?
The treatment is changing lifestyle habits like cutting fats, stopping smoking or starting a
walking program (couch to 5k).
How do you prepare food for the Starch, Lipids, Sugar and Protien tests?
- Crush the food using a pestle and mortar
- Add a few drops of DISTILLED water
- Filter the contents of the mortar through the
funnel and filter paper into a boiling tube
How do you do the Starch Test with Iodine?
- Add a few drops of iodine solution (orange liquid) to the
food solution - If the solution turns blue-black, starch is present
What do you do for the Lipid Test with Ethanol?
- Add a few drops of ethanol to the food solution.
- Shake the boiling tube gently and leave for one minute.
- Pour the ethanol solution into another boiling tube containing water.
- If the solution turns cloudy, the food contains
lipids.
How do you do the Sugar Test with Benedict’s Solution?
- Add a few drops of Benedict’s solution to the food solution.
- Heat in a water bath.
- If the solution turns green the food contains some sugar. If it turns orange-red, the food contains lots of sugar.
How do you do the Protien Test with Buiret Solution
- Add a few drops of Biuret solution to your food solution.
- If the solution turns purple, protein is present.
Name the chemical used in the Starch Test!
Iodine
Name the chemical used in the Lipids Test?
Ethanol
Name the chemical used in the Sugar Test!
Benidict’s solution
Name the chemical used in the protien test?
Biuret Solution
How do you test food for energy?
You have to set the food alight and use it to heat up water. The more it heats up the water, the more energy contained.
What are drugs?
A drug is any chemical substance that when consumed causes a change in an organism’s physiology, including its psychology.
What are the immediate effects of alchohol?
Slurred speech, blurred vision and loss of balance
What are the long term effects of alcohol?
Liver infections, blood disease and digestive problems
What are the social effects of alcohol?
Aggression, sexual urges and self-disclosure.
Q4: What are the treatments for alcohol?
Liver transplant and just not drinking alcohol
What are the immediate effects of Tobacco?
Dizziness, bad breath, coughing, stained teeth and reduced oxygen
Q10: What are the long-term effects of Tobacco?
Loss of voice, loss child in pregnancy or life and potential development of cancer
What are the social effects of Tobacco?
People will think about you differently
What are the treatments for Tobacco?
Lung transplant or stopping smoking, nicotine pads and therapy
Name 5 of the 7 energy sources
Biofuels, Nuclear, Fossil Fuels, Geothermal, Solar Tidal and Wind
Name 2 non-renewable energy sources.
Nuclear and Fossil Fuels
Name 5 renewable energy sources
Biofuels, Geotheramal, Solar, Tidal and Wind
Name 1 super energy sauce.
Ketchup 🍅🍅🍅
How does a power plant work?
1) Water is heated
2) Steam pushes turbines
3) Turbines spin a generator
How do biofuels create the heat to make energy?
They get burned
How does Nuclear Power create heat to create electricity?
Through a chain reaction where electrons split of uranuim atoms into other uranuim atoms splitting more electrons. This is called Fission.
How do Fossil Fuels create heat to create electricity?
They are burned.
How does Geothermal Power create electricity?
By drawing steam out of reservoirs, that flows through turbines, spinning a generator.
How does Solar Power create electricity?
When the silicon meets with photons of sunlight, it releases electrons, creating a electric charge.
How does Tidal Power create electricity?
Water current flows through turbines, spinning a generator.
How does wind power create electricity?
Wind pushes through turbines, spinning a generator.
Are biofuels renewable?
Yes
Is nuclear power renewable?
No
Are fossil fuels renewable?
No
Is geothermal power renewable?
Yes
Is solar power renewable?
Yes
Is tidal power renewable?
Yes
Is wind power renewable?
Yes
What does KE stand for?
Kinetic Energy
What does GPE stand for?
Gravitational Potential Energy
What does EPE stand for?
Elastic Potential Energy
What energy is stored in a battery?
Chemical
Name the 7 Stores of Energy now!
Kinetic, Chemical, Gravitational, Elastic, Thermal, Nuclear, Magnetic
Kinetic Energy
In a moving object
Chemical energy
A fuel or battery
Gravitation Potential
Energy in an object above the ground
Elastic Potential Energy
Energy in a stretched or squashed object
Thermal energy
Energy due to a substances temperature
Nuclear energy
Energy stored in radioactive decay
Magnetic energy
Energy from two separated magnets (attract and repel)
Mechanical pathway
When a force acts and something moves
Electrical pathway
When are current flows?
Heating pathway
Because of a temperature difference
Radiation pathway (wave)
A wave such as light, microwaves, or sound
What energy is stored in a moving car?
Kinetic energy
What energy is stored in an elastic band?
Elastic potential energy
What energy is stored in hot food?
Thermal energy
What energy is stored in a thrown ball?
Kinetic energy
Formula for Power (Watts)
Power = energy / time (Watts = Joules / Time)
Watts tell you …
… energy transferred per second.
What are food chains?
A food chain shows the transfer of energy between organisms. The arrows in a food chain show the flow of energy.
Define producer
The green plan that makes its own food during photosynthesis, using light energy from the sun
Define First stage consumer
an animal that eats the producer. This is a herbivore.
Define second stage consumer
: an animal that eats the first-stage consumer. This is a predator
Define 3rd stage consumer
an animal that eats the second-stage consumer.
What os a herbivore
an animal that eats only plants
Define Carnivore
: an animal that eats only meat/animals.
Define Decomposer
An organism that breaks down dead or waste materials and release nutrients
