Science Flashcards
What is Osmosis?
The movement of molecules from an area of higher water potential to an area of lower water potential through a partially permeable membrane
What is diffusion?
The random movement of molecules from and area of higher concentration to and area of lower concentration WITHOUT a partially permeable membrane
I am an organelle that controls all the activity in the cell. I also contain DNA. What am I?
Nucleus
How many elements are there is CH2OHCO2? How many atoms are there?
- 9.
What is independent variable?
Changed variable in an experiment.
What is dependent variable?
Observed or measured variable in an experiment.
What is parallax error?
When the marking on an instrument is viewed from the wrong angle.
What is the SI unit for density and how can we calculate density?
The SI unit is kg/m3.
Mass = Density x Volume
Hence, Density = Mass/Volume
What are some factors affecting rate of dissolving?
Rate of stirring
Temperature of solvent
Size of solid particles
What is residue and filtrate in filtration?
The residue is the solid that is left on the filter paper.
The filtrate is the liquid that passes through the filter paper.
What is evaporation in separating substances?
To obtain a dissolved solid (solute) from a liquid (solvent). The liquid evaporates, hence this method cannot be used to separate both the liquid and solid and still be able to get both.
What is the distillate in simple distillation?
The pure water that is collected.
What is paper chromatography used for?
To separate the substances in, for instance, inks and dyes.
Why can’t rough surfaces give a smooth reflection?
Its surface is uneven and rough. Since the rough surface scatters light, we will not be able to see our reflections on them.
