Why did migrants come to Singapore and what did they do?

A

Singapore offered an opportunity for migrants to improve their lives.

Many migrants simply took up the jobs they had in their homelands. Coolies had signed contracts to take up a job even before they left home.

What did the traders do in Singapore?

A

Many traders were attracted by the favourable trade policies. They engaged in commercial activities along the Singapore River. Some Europeans set up agency houses and received a commission in return for their services.
e.g. A.L. Johnston & Company in 1820, Boustead & Company in 1828.

How did Peranakans play a role in trade?

A

The Europeans who set up agency houses often had difficulty dealing with Asian traders because of differences in language. Hence, Chinese Peranakans, who could speak Malay, English and Chinese dialects played a significant role in facilitating communication between them.

A
  • Food traders who sold quick and cheap meals to coolies and other workers
  • Small-scale farmers, fishermen, hunters who sold food products they had grown or caught
  • Others sold items like sandals, brooms, towels
  • Street barbers and cobblers who provided haircutting and shoe-mending services to the community

What did moneylenders do in Singapore?

A

Indians who were skilled in trasde, accounting, banking and credit were attracted to Singapore as an entrepot.
The Chettiars was the most influencial group. They arrvied in 1820s onwards. Different groups of traders would borrow money from them as very few banks would lend them money. In this way, the Chettiars contributed to Singapore’s commercial importance.

What did the male coolies do in Singapore?

A

They provided much-needed labour.
- Load and unload goods
- Carry goods and to and from boats and warehouses
Coolies were involved in the loading of coal onto steamships. Their hard work helped Singapore gain a reputation for efficiency.

From the 1930s onwards, Samsui women became more common. They had to balance heavy pails of cement across their shoulders. They came from Sanshui in China.

A

During 1825 to 1873, they were the main source of of labour for public works in Singapore.
They were tasked to clear jungles, sweep the streets, lay the earliest roads, tend the town’s gardens and parks, and contruct buildings.
e.g. St. Andrew’s Church was build by convict labourers.

What did the boatmakers do in Singapore?

A

Some communities were engaged in boatmaking. The Bugis were skilled in building ships and boats that Malay traders used to ferry goods to neighbouring islands. They established a thriving shipbuilding industry and Bugis trading vessels.

What did the locals do to provide educational opportunities?

A

1) Tan Kim Seng opened two Hokkien schools
2) Gan Eng Seng founded the Anglo-Chinese Free School in 1885. Teachers would use dialects like Hokkien, Cantonese and Teochew.
3) Syed Mohamed bin Ahmed Alsagoff helped found the Alsagoff Arab School in 1912

What did the locals of Singapore do about healthcare?

A

Many diseases were common among migrants. The government did little to provide healthcare for the public.
1) Gan Eng Seng led the establishment of Thong Chai Medical Institution in the latter part of the 19th century. It ran a clinic to give free treatment and medicine to poor people.
2) Successful businessmen donated large sums of money to provide medical services and amenities. Water wells were built and the poor had proper burials when they died.
3) Tan Tock Seng constructed a hospital for the poor in 1844.
