Geography: Chapter 3 Flashcards
Physical States of Matter
Solid, Liquid, Gas.
Where is water found?
Water is found in water stores. There are freshwater and saltwater stores. Freshwater stores are glaciers, rivers, lakes,. groundwater and soil. Oceans are the only saltwater stores.
What is the order of the hydrological cycle?
Precipitation, Groundwater, Surface Runoff, Evaporation, Transpiration, Condensation.
Precipitation
Water falls as rain, or snow if the air is cold enough.
Groundwater
Water that seeps into the ground may be absorbed by plants or stored as groundwater.
Surface Runoff
Water flows from the highlands and over the ground surface into streams and rivers.
Evaporation
The Sun’s heat causes water to evaporate. Water changes into water vapour.
Transpiration
Plants give out water vapour through their leaves.
Condensation
Warm moist air cools as it rises. Water vapour changes into water droplets. Small droplets combine to form bigger droplets. Large amounts of water droplets gather to form clouds.
What is a water budget?
A water budget equation describes the flow of water in and out of a catchment area.
Water surplus: More input than output.
Water deficit: More output than input.
What is net change?
As the amount of water stored within a catchment area changes.
