SCI Examination Flashcards
Symptoms with Anterior Cord Syndrome?
Paralysis below level of lesion
No pain and temp
Symptoms Central Cord
Pain/temp impaired proprioception ok
UE>LE
Symptoms of Brown Sequard syndrome
I/L spastic weakness & loss proprioception
C/L loss of pain and temp
Symptoms of Posterior Column syndrome
Impaired position and vibratory senses, Ataxia
What are some primary (Direct) impairments ?
Motor, Sensory, Tone, Respiratory, Bowel, Bladder, sexual, autonomic, and pain.
Autonomic= Orthostasis, temperature control, dysreflexia, CV response to exercise
What are some secondary (indirect) impairments?
ROM/ Flexibility
Strength
Risk disuse, contracture, and postural deficit
Edema, skin checks
What are some secondary pathologies?
Pneumonia UTI Decubiti (pressure sores) Osteoporosis DVT Depression overuse Fall related
What is Autonomic Dysreflexia?
Excessive sympathetic response to noxious stimulus introduced to the body below level of injury
Typically T6 and above
Atypical T7-T8
When will Autonomic Dysreflexia?
Will not be seen until emergence from spinal shock. Can be life threatening (subarachnoid hemorrhage)
What are the signs and symptoms of AD?
Elevated BP Pounding headache Bradycardia Sweat above lesion Flushed above lesion Nasal drainage Anxiety
AD interventions?
Take BP and Pulse Sit patient up Loosen clothing Check tubes for kinks Check pressure spots Meds if systolic BP > 150 mmhg
What are cardiovascular limitations in tetraplegia?
Sympathetically mediated HR response gone
Circulatory Hypokinesis
Lack of adrenal medulla innervation
Fitness gain result from peripheral adaptations
Small muscle mass
Most fast twitch fibers
What are cardiovascular limitations Paraplegia?
Complete or partial sympathetic outflow
Circulatory Hypokinesis (drop BP and large quantity of blood squandered in inactive areas)
Fitness gains mix central and peripheral.
Greater available muscle mass
Cardio limitations incomplete
wild card could be bunch of stuff
Normal or increased tone in LE help to decrease venous pooling/ increase venous return
What are pulmonary impairments SCI?
Weakened/ paralyzed muscles of respiration
Diaphragmatic breathing
Diminished cough
