Muscles and Nerves of the Hand Flashcards
What muscles does the recurrent branch of the median nerve innervate? (low level wrist injury - median nerve palsy)
Abductor Pollicis Brevis
Opponens Pollicis
Superficial Head of the Flexor Pollicis Brevis
What muscles does the recurrent branch of the median nerve innervate in a high level wrist injury? (same presentation as low-level wrist injury)
(Anterior Interosseous Nerve is most often involved - unable to make the OK sign)
Flexor Digitorum Superficialis
Flexor Digitorium Profundus to index and long
Flexor Pollicis Longus
Pronator Quadratus
If at elbow, can include flexor carpi radialis and palmaris longus.
What muscles are affected during a low level (wrist) injury of the ulnar nerve?
Abductor Digiti Minimi Opponens Digiti Flexor Digiti Minimi Palmar Interossei Dorsal Interossei Lumbricals to small and ring fingers Adductor Pollicis Deep head of Flexor Pollicis Brevis
What muscles are affected during a high level injury of the ulnar nerve?
Similar to low level (See below), but may include:
Flexor Digitorum to ring and small fingers
Flexor Carpi Ulnaris
(Low level = Abductor Digiti Minimi, Opponens Digiti, Flexor Digiti Minimi, Palmar Interossei, Dorsal Interossei, Lumbricals to small and ring fingers, Adductor Pollicis, Deep head of Flexor Pollicis Brevis)
What muscles are affected during a low level (ELBOW!!) injury of the radial nerve?
Extensor Digitorum Communis Extensor Indicis Extensor Pollicis Longus Extensor Carpi Ulnaris Abductor Pollicis Longus Extensor Pollicis Brevis Extensor Digiti Quinti
What muscles are affected during a high level (proximal to ECRL and ECRB) injury of the radial nerve?
Same as low level, but includes the ECRL and ECRB
(Low level = Extensor Digitorum Communis, Extensor Indicis, Extensor Pollicis Longus, Extensor Carpi Ulnaris, Abductor Pollicis Longus, Extensor Pollicis Brevis, Extensor Digiti Quinti)
