Sci - Chapter 6 Flashcards
what is a cell?
The basic building block of life
what is a cell membrane and their function?
The thin outer layer that surrounds the cell. Controls the movement of substances into and out of the cell.
what is a cell wall and their function?
The tough outer covering of a plant cell. Protects and supports/Rigid and gives the cell a regular shape.
what are chloroplasts?
a green structure in the cytoplasm of a plant cell, where photosynthesis occurs ( it contains chlorophyll )
what is cytoplasm and their function?
Jelly-like substance that fills a cell. Site where most chemical reactions take place.
what is vacuole and their function?
a space within a cell. Stores liquid, food and waste materials.
what is nucleus function?
Centre that controls all activities that occur within the cell.
spell dna out
deoxyribonucleic acid
what is a microscope?
a scientific instrument used to magnify a specimen
what is a multicellular?
describing organisms that are made up of more than one cell
what is photosynthesis?
the process in which plants make food using raw materials in the presence of chlorophyll
and light, and given off oxygen.
what is a system?
a group of organs working together to perform a specific function
what is a unicellular?
describing organisms that are made up of only one cell
what is a tissue?
a group of similar cells working together to perform the same function.
