Sci - Chapter 3 Flashcards
What are elements?
Elements are the basic building blocks of living and non-living matter. They cannot be broken down into simpler substances.
What are compounds?
Compounds consist of two or more elements that are chemically combined together.
What are mixtures?
A mixture is made up of two or more elements and/or compounds that are not chemically combined. (e.g., air, nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide and water vapour.)
What is a solution?
A solution is a mixture in which one substance dissolves completely in another substance.
What is a solute and a solvent?
The substance that dissolves is called the solute and the substance in which the solute dissolves is called the solvent.
What are some factors that affect the rate of dissolving the solute?
Size of solute particles, temperature of solvent and rate of stirring.
What is insoluble and solube?
Insoluble is when the substances do not dissolve in a given
solvent. A solube is when a solute dissolves completely in a solvent.
What is a suspension?
A suspension is a mixture that contains insoluble substances in a solvent.
