what are some biology and genetics for school age?
school age is 5-12yrs old
- physical growth is much slower compared to infancy
- motor skills are perfected
-mental abilities grow - personal responsibility in hygiene and nutrition grows
what about respiration?
changes in muscles of breathing. before the age of 6 years diaphragm primary breathing muscle. after 6 years of age thoracic muscles develop. respiration slows to 14-24bpm
what about cardiac?
heart slowly grows in size and heart rate slows to 60-160bpm
what other biology functions to note?
- increase GI system maturity
- bladder capacity increases
- immune system better able to antigen-antibody response
what about oral development
transition from deciduous to permanent teeth
loses and gain 4 teeth a year between 6-13yrs old

define enuresis and 2 types
involuntary urination at an age when control should be present
primary: children with primary enuresis have never achieved bladder control
secondary: secondary enuresis has periods of dryness and recurrent enuresis
what is nocturnal vs diurnal enuresis
nocturnal: involuntary enuresis that occurs at least once a month
diurnal enuresis: wetting during anytime
define encopresis
persistent voluntary or involuntary passing of stool into Childs underpants after the age of 4 years
what about sleep?
no difficulty sleeping
no need for naps in between
most common problems is night terrors or sleep walking
