What are the 4 phases of the sexual response cycle?
- Desire: sex drive, motivation, wish fulfillment
- Excitement: arousal
- Orgasm: peak of pleasure, lasts 3-25s
- Resolution: disgorgement of blood from the genitals, body returns to resting state

What are 2 components of excitement phase of the sexual cycle?
- Vasodilation/constriction: engorgement of BVs in genitals bc of dilation of other BVs
- Myotonia: ms cx in the genitals and whole body
What are some gender differences in resolution phase of the sexual cycle?
Females have no refractory period
Men may have a refractory period that lasts for several days
Define: Male Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder
Deficient sexual desire for 6mo, taking age and context into account.
Define: Female Sexual Interest / Arousal Disorder
Lack of sexual interest with 3 sx for 6mo:
- Less interest
- Less thoughts
- Less initiation and receptive-ness
- Less pleasure (at least 75% of time)
- Less arousal in response to internal/external cues
- Less genital sensations
Define: Erectile Disorder
What are some ED risk factors?
1 of the following sx on all sexual occasions for 6mo
- Can’t obtain erection
- Can’t maintain erection til completion
- Dec in erectile rigidity
Define: Female Orgasmic Disorder
Recurrent delay/abscence in orgasm following nml excitement phase for 6mo
Define: Delayed Ejaculation
Either sx for almost all occasions for 6mo:
- Delay in ejaculation
- Infrequency/absence ejaculation
Define: Premature Ejaculation
Persistent ejaculation within 1 minute of penetration for 6mo on all occasions
Define: Genito-Pelvic Pain Penetration Disorder
Persistent difficulties with 1 or more for 6mo:
- Vaginal penetration
- Vulvovaginal pain during penetration
- Fear about pain
- Tensing of pelvic ms during penetration
What are some examples of victimizing vs non-victimizing paraphilias?
Victimizing = unlikely to seek Rx
Non-victimizing = no severe co-morbid psych. “Alternative sexual lifestyle”

- Hypoxyphilia: oxygen deprivation
- Sexual Sadism: suffering of someone else (might not have consent)
- Exhibitionism: flashes strangers
- Fetishistic: non-living items or non-genitals (elbow)
- Frotteuristic: rubbing against non-consenting person
- Transvestic: cross-dressing
- Voyeuristic: watching unsuspecting person
- Pedophilic: prepubescent children (under 13)
