Schmidt: Behavioral Therapies Flashcards
Learning is the assc of things that take place together in time
Classical conditioning
With Pavlov’s dogs, what are the…?
Unconditioned stimulus
Unconditioned response
Conditioned stimulus
Conditioned response
UCS = dog food
UCR = salivation
CS = bell
CR = salivation (same as UCR)
Extinction
The loss of the learned response by exposure to the UCR (food) without the CS (bell)
Generalization
When similar stimuli become the CS (rats -> santa) for the CR (fear)
Steps of Classical conditioning to treat phobias
What is the technical name for this type of therapy?
- Object of phobia (UCS) –> relaxation (UCR)
- Relax activity (CS) + UCS –> relaxation (UCR)
- UCS –> relax (CR)
Systematic Desensatization = list hierarchy of fears and pair them with relaxation one at a time from easy to hard
Learning is the assc of things that take place sequentially
Operant conditioning
- Added stimulus causes MORE behavior
- Added stimulus causes LESS behavior
- Subtracted stimulus causes LESS behavior
- Subtracted stimulus causes MORE behavior
-
POS reinforcement
- Candy causes kid to do dishes more
-
POS punishment
- Spanking causes kid to hit sister less
-
NEG punishment
- Taking away phone causes teen to sneak out less
-
NEG reinforcement
- Kid stops whining when mom buys more candy
Why is spanking not recommended by Academy of Peds?
Kids that get spanked are more depressed, angry, and use more alcohol. A child might think it’s ok to hit someone when they are mad, so might hit spouse or siblings.
