What are the Negative signs & symptoms of Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorder ?
- Focus is inward. –> the client creates their own world
- Inappropriate affect, flat affect, or blunted affect
What are the Positive symptoms seen with Alterations in speech in Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorder ?
- Disorganized thoughts
- Communication is one of their biggest problems
- Echolalia
- Neologism
- Word salads
What is Echolalia ?
Hear a word & repeat it a lot
What is Neologism ?
Making up new words
want to seek clarification. “I don’t understand”
(these words don’t mean anything)

What are the Positive symptoms seen with Alterations in thinking in Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorder ?
- Delusions (false beliefs)
- Concrete thinking
What is a Delusion - Fasle belief seen with Positive Symptoms with Alterations in thinking ?
Religiosity - a delusion of a special relationship with god or they are god or a special messenger of god
What are the Positive symptoms seen with Alterations in Perception in Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorder ?
- Hallucinations (auditory most common)
- 90% experience hallucinations
- Can be visual, auditory, gustatory, or tactile
- Usually connected to times of anxiety
What are the Tx’s for Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorder ?
- Decrease Stimuli
- Observe frequently (without looking suspicious)
- Orient frequently
- Keep conversations reality based
- Observe for hallucinations
In regards to hallucinations, how do you want to approach them ?
Warn them before you touch them
How should you NOT refer to the client’s hallucinations ? and why ?
Dont refer to the voices as “they” B/c this makes the hallucinations seem real
What should you let the client know about your feelings about the hallucinations ?
Let the client know that you do not share the perception!
In clients with hallucinations what do you want to get them involved in ?
Involved in an Activity!
What do you want to do with a client experiencing a hallucination ?
Get the client out of the hallucination and into the real world
