schizophrenia - brain structure Flashcards
reduced size of hippocampus
can affect sensory filtering
hard to focus, become overwhelmed with busy environments, can cause anxiety, fear or paranoia
smaller amygdala
reductions in emotions
flattening of effect
reduced metabolic rates in the prefrontal cortex
poor working memory and processing language
reduced logical thinking could cause delusions
this area of the brain matures later (adolescence) - injury in this area would not be apparent until this area matures
structural differences in the basal ganglia
may affect movement patterns
leads to motor dysfunctions
reduced activity or structural abnormalities in the visual and auditory cortices
can cause hallucinations
why do these structural differences occur
flu during the 4th or 7th month of pregnancy
conceived during a famine - nutritional deficiency
perinatal and birth complications
brain injury interacts with normal brain development (would not be apparent in the prefrontal cortex until later)
