What is psychosis?
inability to distinguish between symptoms of delusion, hallucination and disordered thinking from reality
Lack of insight
What are hallucinations?
Full force and clarity of true perception located in external space No external stimulus Not willed or controlled Affect all 5 senses
What is a delusional belief?
Unshakeable idea or belief which is out of keeping with person’s cultural and social background. Held with extraordinary conviction
E.g. grandiose, paranoid, hypochondriacal, self-referral
What illnesses have psychotic symptoms?
Schizophrenia
Delirium
Severe affective disorder
What is schizophrenia?
Severe mental illness affecting thinking, emotion and behaviour
Age of onset 15-35
What are positive symptoms of schizophrenia?
Hallucinations
Delusions
Disordered thinking
What are negative symptoms of schizophrenia?
Apathy
Lack of interest
Lack of emotions

Auditory hallucinations
