What are the Psychological symptoms of depression?
Depression, Anxiety, Peprlexity, anhedonia, Diurinal variation, inability to relax
Guilt, hopelessness, worthlessness, neurotic
Delusions and hallucinations
What are the physical symptoms of depression?
Change in: energy, sleep, appetite, libido, bowels
Pain
Agitation/retardation
What are the social symptoms of depression?
loss of interests, irritability, apathy, withdrawal, loss of confidence
Loss of concentration, registration and memory
What is the ICD-10 criteria for depression?
Last for at least 2 weeks
No hypomanic or manic episodes
Not attributed to psychoactive substance use or organic mental disorder
If psychotic symptoms or stupor then severe depression with psychotic symptoms
What are treatments for depression?
Anti-depressants (SSRIs, TCAs, MaOi, SNRIs) Psychological treatments (CBT, IPT, Family therapy) Physical treatments (ECT, Psyschosurgery)
What is mania?
State of feeling or mood that can range from near normal to severe life threatening illness
Often associated with grandiose ideas, disinhibition and loss of judgement
ICD-10 classification of mania?
1 week severe enough to disrupt ordinary work and social activities more or less completely
Increased mood, energy, overactivity, pressure of speech, decreased need for sleep
Disinhibition
Grandiosity
Alteration of senses
Extravagant spending
Can be irritable rather than elated
Treatment of Mania?
Antipsychotics (Olanzapine, Risperidone, Quetiapine)
Mood stabilisers (lamotrigine, sodium valproate, carbamazepine)
Lithium
ECT
ICD 10 of bipolar?
Consists of (2+) repeated episodes of depression and mania or hypomania
If no mania then diagnosis recurrent depression
If no depression then hypomania or bipolar
