What is Wernicke’s encephalopathy?

A

Caused by thiamine deficiency
confusion, ataxia, opthalmoplegia, nystagmus
Treat with IM thiamine
Can progress to Korsakoff’s psychosis

A

Retrograde amnesia, decreased recent and remote memory

Give thiamine, 25% have improvement
