Need two of the following in delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speed and negative symptoms, psychomotor symptoms.
Florid for one month. Persists for 6 months.
Type 1-aka positive
Type 2- negative

Causes of positive symptoms( type 1)

A

Biochemistry
Increase in glutamate, dopamine, serotonin
Decrease in GABA
Receptors hypersensitive to them. 6 times as many dopamine receptors.

Causes for negative (type 2) symptoms

A

Brain structure
Larger ventricles- less brain tissue
Increase in cracks in the brain wider and deeper.
Smaller thalamus( relay center )
Small corpus callosum
Less active frontal lobes
Increase activity in amygdala (fear center ) and hippocampus ( memory)
