Delusions
Unfounded beliefs.
Persecution- somebody’s out to get you
Grandeur- exaggerated view of importance( religious savior, power)
Reference-behaviors/events specific meaning for them on tv or the radio
Control-thoughts being controlled by other force (aliens)
Thought insertion- putting thoughts directly into mind
Positive symptoms
Pathological excesses
Additions abnormal to behavior
Thought speech disorders
Disorganized incoherence no structure or meaning (word salad). Flight of ideas. Fast
Neologism- new words they invent ex smeep
Clanging- rhyme, sound over context
Perseveration- repeating same word/phrase
Hallucinations
Auditory hallucinations inside or outside the head
Visual command hallucinated heightened perceptions
Inappropriate affect
Inappropriate to situation
Emotions giggling smiling when bad news
Negative emotions
Deficits missing in emotion or behavior
Alogia
Lack of speech
Don’t say much in content or meaning
Silent
Flat affect
No emotion
Very blunt emotion
Avolition
Decrease in motivation, grooming, exhausted
Social withdrawal
Friends family work all isolated from
Psychomotor symptoms
Unusual movements
Catatonia stupor- not move/ speak, wax figure
Catatonic rigidity- stand in upright, resistance hard to move
Catatonic posturing-weir position, stand there for hours
Catatonic excitement-limbs flailing kicking
Diagnosed with schizophrenia
Need two of the following in delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speed and negative symptoms, psychomotor symptoms.
Florid for one month. Persists for 6 months.
Type 1-aka positive
Type 2- negative
Causes of positive symptoms( type 1)
Biochemistry
Increase in glutamate, dopamine, serotonin
Decrease in GABA
Receptors hypersensitive to them. 6 times as many dopamine receptors.
Causes for negative (type 2) symptoms
Brain structure
Larger ventricles- less brain tissue
Increase in cracks in the brain wider and deeper.
Smaller thalamus( relay center )
Small corpus callosum
Less active frontal lobes
Increase activity in amygdala (fear center ) and hippocampus ( memory)
Triggers
Drugs Parenting Stressful events Viral infection from mom Oxygen deprivation during delivery.
