Define Schizophrenia
Characterised by a loss of contact with external reality and abnormal thinking and perceptions. For example ~ hearing things that have been ‘self-generated’, do not actually exist, and being unaware that what is being perceived is unreal.
What is Schizophrenia?
Psychotic disorder
What are POSITIVE SYMPTOMS?
Positive are those that are experiences that happen in addition to normal experience.
Positive symptom: Delusions
Eg. A fixed, false belief that is held with absolute certainty despite contradictory evidence.
Delusion: Persecution
Eg. Someone is out to ‘get’ them.
Delusion: Reference
Eg. TV newsreader is sending secret messages specifically to them.
Delusion: Control
Eg. Aliens are controlling their thoughts
Delusion: Grandeur
Eg. God has selected them for a special mission
Delusion: Thought Broadcasting
Eg. Other people are ‘reading’ their thoughts
Delusions: Thought insertion
Eg. Someone is putting unwanted thoughts into their mind.
Positive symptom: Hallucinations
Sensations and perceptions that are not received from the environment but from the person’s own mind. All senses can hallucinate.
Hallucination: Critical hallucination
Persistent, negative, derogatory commentary on their behaviour personal qualities - eg. You’re are useless, a loser
