What is Schizophrenia ?

Comes from the Latin ‘split mind’, its a disorder where individuals lose touch with reality.
What is used to diagnose schizophrenia ?

Criteria for diagnosing schizophrenia
One of these
- Thought echo, withdrawal or thought broadcasting
- delusions of control, influence, or passivity clearly referred to body or limb movements or specific thought, actions or sensations; delusional perception
- Hallucinatorily voices giving a running commentary on patients behaviour, discussing him between themselves or other types of Hallucinatority voices coming from some part of the body
- Persistent delusions of other kinds that are culturally inappropriate and impossible ( communicating w aliens )
Or at least 2 of these
-persistent hallucinations that occur daily for a month. These hallucinations may be accompanied by delusions without clear emotional content or by persistent over-valued ideas.
-neologism, breaks in train of thought, resulting in incoherence or irrelevant speech
- catatonic behaviour such as excitement or waxy flexibility, negativism and stupor
- Negative symptoms such as marked apathy and blunting, incongruity of emotional responses
Key statistics of schizophrenia
- 1% of population are diagnosed with schizophrenia
- affects men and women equally
- women tend to be diagnosed in early 30s and men tend to be diagnosed in early 20s
10 years after being diagnosed with schizophrenia
25% fully recover
25% much improved
25% need support
15% hospitalised
10% dead
Normally diagnosed in people in their 40s
British people of Caribbean and African origin are more likely to be diagnosed with schizophrenia.
People of Asian origin have lower than average rates of diagnosis
