What is Schizophrenia?
A disorder where a person has difficulty distinguishing what is real and what is in their imagination.
What are positive symptoms?
Additional experiences beyond those of ordinary existence.
Give examples of positive symptoms.
Hallucinations
Delusions
What are hallucinations?
Sensory experiences of stimuli that have either no basis in reality or are distorted perception of things that are there.
What are delusions?
Beliefs that have no basis in reality e.g. the sufferer is someone else or that they are a victim of conspiracy.
What are negative symptoms?
The loss of visual abilities and experiences.
Give two example of negative symptoms.
Avolition
Speech Poverty
What is Avolition?
Loss of motivation to carry out tasks and results in lowered activity levels.
What 2 organisations classify schizophrenia?
International Classification of Disease Edition 10 (ICD-10)
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual 5 (DSM5)
How do the DSM 5 classify schizophrenia compared to the ICD-10?
One of the positive symptoms must be present for the DSM whereas two or more negative symptoms are sufficient for the ICD-10.
