Schaffers 4 stages EVALUATION Flashcards
What was Schaffer and Emersons aim of the study on stages of attachment?
To investigate FORMATION of early attachments.
-The AGE which they developed.
-The EMOTIONAL INTENSITY
-WHO they were directed
What was Schaffers method of his study on stages of attachment?
-60 babies from Glasgow with working-class families.
-babies and mom visited at HOME every MONTH for a year, and again 18 months later.
-Asked mom questions about babies protests when separated (mom leaving room) to measure the babies ATTACHMENT.
What was Schaffers findings?
-Between 25-32 weeks of age, 50% of babies showed seperation anxiety towards a specific adult ,who was most INTERACTIVE and SENSITIVE to infants SIGNALS.
-by 40 weeks, 80% had a specific attachment.
What is one strength of schaffrs stages?
That there is support form Schaffer and Emersons study.
Between 25-32 weeks, 50% of babies showed signs of separation anxiety towards a particular adult-mum.
By 40 weeks, 80% had a specific attachment and 30% displayed multiple attachments which fit Schafers stages.
THIS THEREFORE SUPPORTS SCHAFFERS STAGES BECAUSE
It does suggest that attachment develops through a series of stages across the first year of life.
What is a strength of having the observations carried out in their own homes?
It gives the study high ecological validity, as it’s carried out in the babies real life settings making it true and minimising distractions.
What is one weakness of having the mother interview the children?
They may be biased in their findings, reporting unsettlement when they lead to appear socially desirable.
THIS IS A PROBLEM BECAUSE
It will affect the studies internal validity, as we may not be collecting accurate results.
What is another weakness of having the mother interview the children?
They are not TRAINED to report observations accurately.
Use of self-report may induce social desirability bias and effect findings, lowering internal validity, making schaffers stages inaccurate.
What is one issue with the sample of babies?
All 60 were from Glasgow. High population validity only got Glasgow, and results cannot be generalized beyond there, to represent other areas and cultures.
THERFORE
The study actually has low population validity, as it forms an imposed etic and a beta-bias and minimizes results from all other countries and their differences.
what is one strength of schaffers study?
a strength of his study is that they have practical APPLICATION in day care.
in asocial, indiscriminate and multiple stages children will go to daycare with no problems and be comforted by an unspecific adult. But in the specific stage, starting daycare with an unfamiliar adult may be difficult.
THEREFORE,
the knowledge of scahffers attachment stages could be used by daycare settings to advise parents on good starting times for daycare, and give them advice on how to react to their childs behaviour.
