Influence of early attachments on childhood and adult relationships using the IWM Flashcards
What did Kerns find about securely attached infants, in comparison with insecure attached?
securely attached are more likely to have GOOD quality peer relationships during childhood, whereas INSECURE are more likely to have DIFFICULTIES making or maintaining friendships
what did the Minnesota child-parent study find ab out infants who were rated high in social competence during childhood?
They were more empathetic, popular and felt less isolated.
using the IWM we can understand this since infants who are SECURELY attached will have POSITIVE expectations that others they relate to will be trustworthy and friendly in return. Providing the IDEAL platform for interaction.
how does the IWM influence adult relationships?
it can influence the parenting style, as these have been based on PERSONAL experiences and expectations of the IWM, attachment type tends to be PASSED DOWN through generations.
what did Bailey et al find when he looked at attachment type of 100 mothers and their infants, (assessed through the SS) with the relationships they had with their own
mothers. (assessed through an interview)
VAST proportion had the SAME attachment type to their infant as their own mother, SUPPORTING the concept of the iwm influencing parenting style.
(can also be supported by Harlows monkey studies)
what did Hazans conduct his study on?
the association between attachment and adult relationships
what Hazan’s procedure?
They analysed 620 replies to a ‘LOVE QUIZ.’ printed in an american newspaper.
The quiz had 3 sections.
1.assessing current or most important relationship
2.assessed general love experiences.
3.assessed attachment type by asking respondents to choose which of the three statements best described their feelings.
what did Hazan find?
56% securely attached
25% insecure avoidant
19% insecure-resistant
those with secure were most likely to have good and LONGER lasting romantic experiences.
avoidant= reveal jealousy and fear of intimacy
patterns of attachment behaviour are REFLECTED in romantic relationships
