What steps would you take to SECURE the scene (PRCSCE)
P - Powers to secure scene (S116)
R - Remove all persons from scene
C - set cordons using police tape
S - arrange scene guard, define duties and scene log
C - control - prevent anyone from entering
E - prevent further loss or damage of evidence
What steps would you take to PRESERVE the scene (CRPSP)
C - common approach path
R - record any movements, actions taken in the scene
P - preserve what is there, leave in situ, do not touch anything
S - stepping plates
P - prepare to take action to preserve or record evidence
What steps would you take to RECORD the scene (PROMIS)
P - Photographs
R - make an accurate record and report to OC investigation
O - Observe and record precise details of the scene, particularly the location of the victim.
M - Identify anything which has moved, note original and eventual positions. DO NOT MOVE BACK
I - Integrity of the scene is established and maintained by a crime scene log.
Log contains names, times, reasons and movements of persons entering the scene
S - Sketch
What is the purpose of a Crime Scene Log?
Reduction in traffic in and out of the scene. To help protect the integrity of the scene.
The OC Investigation will expect a brief at the scene as to:
- what has occurred
- what action has been done
- what needs doing
- what hasn’t been done
All police that initially attend the scene must record what before end of shift? (FAADO)
- Photographs of Footwear
- Actions taken
- Alterations made to the scene
- attend a hot Debrief
- Observations
What are the primary functions of an initial police responder? CAT
- coordinate tasks
- attend the scene at an early stage
- take control of the situation
Common Approach Path
- Take care not to use the route taken by the offender
- look over the whole area without touching or disturbing it
- consider using stepping plates
- use appropriate protective clothing
