Purpose of OC Exhibits
Is responsible for establishing, and maintaining exhibit management systems and for maintaining the physical security and continuity of all exhibits
OC Exhibits must update OC Investigation with relevant information relating to:
- What exhibits have been found and their movements
- the results of any exhibit examinations
- whether any further enquires are required
Safe storage of exhibits
- only accept an exhibits if:
- Exhibit label contains the number and name of the operation
- property is corrected packaged and sealed, exhibit label is visible.
- promp action necessary to preserve the exhibit has been taken
Examination of exhibits. OC Exhibits will…
Determine, plan, and record the examination and interrogation of every exhibit and establish its relevance to the investigation.
Ensure all exhibits identified for forensice examination are prepared before being delivered, specifically
- items are separately WRAPPED
- all parcels are SEALED
- all items are LABELLED and NUMBERED
- a list of all items is attached to the POL 143
- the POL 143 is CONSISTENT with the labels on the items
- items are in an appropriate condition e.g. clothing is dry, blood samples are refrigerated.
OC Exhibits is responsible for preparing the exhibits for production at court. Thus must be conducted in a manner whuch:
- clearly demonstrates the evidential value of the exhibits
- avoids any risk of physical injury, disease, accident, contamination, damage
Chain of custody
Includes every individual who has has custody of an exhibit, from time it was first discovered until the time it is produced in court.
It is used to demonstrate the integrity and thefore admissibility of exhibits.
Why is it important to develop a forensic strategy for examination of exhibits
To prioritise tasks in line with the direction of the investigation.
Action of OC Exhibits when there are further enquiries?
Must be highlighted to the 2IC so that follow up enquiries can be initiated.

Ensure an appreciation is conducted to ensure every exhibit is intrrrogated to establish evidential value and investigative relevance.
