Initial Witnesses Flashcards
The plan to preserve and recover evidence from forensically important witness should include? (SMSD)
Swabs - any other stains present
Medical - forensic medical examination e.g. fingernails, combing
Seizure - of clothing, footwear and anything the suspect touched.
DNA - area the suspect touched and any blood on the witness.
What to consider when dealing with forensically important witness? (PIC)
P - photograph witness at the scene to assist CCTV enquiries and OC witness at court.
I - photograph any injuries suffered by the witness
C - Cross contamination - avoid potential cross contamination by arranging witness to use a different vehicle and interview room as victim/suspect/other witnesses
What should be done when electronic recording devices have been used at the scene?
Every effort should be made to obtain and download these images/recordings.
A witness is any person who has?
Information about an alleged offence or offender
Where a witnes has a visual recording but refuses to handover the device consideration should be given to?
- Sufficient grounds w/l search under SnS 2012
- consider warrant to seize the device.

Alternative Ways for witness to give evidence
E.g screen, video recording, closed circuit cameras
Alibi Witness - Upon instructions from the crown solicitor the investigator must
- Enquiries to determine the veracity of the alibi.
- Conduct enquiries as directed by the CS or OC Investigation including NIA checks on the alibi witness.
- Forward the results of enquiries, incl. any statements obtained to the CS
