Scenario MOI Flashcards
Sudden stretching of brachial plexus
Neck is forced laterally to the opposite side while the shoulder is depressed
Eg: shoulder block in football
Brachial plexus injury
Head snaps back suddenly
Eg: blocked or tackled when not prepared
Cervical whiplash
Stress fracture of the spine
Shear forces, increased with extension and rotation
Repetitive overuse or traumatic
Spondylolysis
Repetitive work, overhead athletes/ workers
Poor posture
Congenital abnormalities
Thoracic outlet syndrome
Sudden twisting, stumbling forward, falling backwards, stepping too far down, landing heavily on one leg
SI joint sprain
Applied force that translates the acromion downward, backward or inward, while the clavicle is pushed against the rib cage.
Eg: FOOSH( falling on outstretched hand), landing on lateral aspect of shoulder
Acromioclavicular joint sprain
Impact with the shoulder abducted, externally rotated and extension
Glenohumeral dislocation
Repetitive injury or acute- excessive force applied which weakens the tendons
Rotator cuff tear
Acute trauma to the shoulder ( fall)
Poor joint mechanics
Shoulder bursitis
Occurs in repetitive overhead activities
Swimming, tennis, throwing, volleyball, factory workers
Postural abnormalities
Shoulder impingement syndrome
FOOSH, fall on tip of shoulder or direct impact
Clavicular fracture
Direct blow or fall on arm
FOOSH
Humeral fracture
Hip extension, lateral rotation, and abduction
Groin strain
Due to a blow to the iliac crest, causes severe pinching of the soft tissues
Hip pointer
Impact on thigh which compresses musculature against femur
Quad contusion
Progressive onset
Training errors, improper footwear, tight Achilles’ tendon, muscle weakness
Repetitive micro trauma
Shin splints
Varus force and/ or internal rotation
LCL sprain
Deceleration force with internal tibial rotation and valgus force hyperextension
Non contact
ACL sprain
Often occurs in conjunction with ligament tears
Axial loading and rotation
Forceful extension to flexion or vice versa
Poor rate of healing due to poor blood supply
Meniscal tear
Valgus force with deceleration from quads
Twisting/ pivoting motion
Patellar subluxation or dislocation
Overuse injury
Eccentric loading of quads causes tendon to become irritated
Maltracking of patella
Patellar tendonitis
