SC1a - States Of Matter Flashcards
What are the three states of matter?
Solids, liquids and gases
Describe the movements of particles in a gas
Fast in all directions
Describe the movements of particles in a liquid
Move around each other
Describe the movements of particles in a solid
Vibrate around fixed positions
What kind of changes are state changes?
Physical changes
What is sublimation?
A solid going straight to a gas
What is deposition?
A gas going straight to a solid
What changes in physical changes?
Only the arrangement, movement and amount of stored energy in particles
How are particles attracted to each other.
By weak forces of attraction
Which states has the most forces of attraction?
A solid
What must happen for attractive forces to be overcome?
Energy must be transferred from the surroundings to the particles
Why does water vapour turn to droplets on a cold window?
As energy is being transferred from the particles to its surroundings
Why does the temperature stay constant when a solid is melting or freezing?
Weak forces of attraction a being broken or formed
What does it mean if the temperature of a substance is below the melting point?
The substance is solid
What does it mean if the temperature of a substance is between the melting and boiling point?
The substance is liquid
