Why is it necessary to transport waste products such as urea out of the body?
It can become toxic, CO2 can can also build up and dissolve in the blood, making it acidic
What is the function of alveoli?
Gas exchange by diffusion between air in lungs and blood in capillaries
What are the adaptations of alveoli?

Small and arranged in clusters
—> creates a large surface area for faster diffusion - Provide a large blood supply
—> maintains concentration gradient - Walls are very thin
—> there is a short distance for diffusion, increasing the rate
What factors affect diffusion?
- Surface area
—> as surface area increases, so does diffusion rate
—> more space for particles to move so diffusion happens faster - Concentration difference
—> larger difference in concentration, faster rate of diffusion - Distance
—> more distance = slower diffusion
How are red blood cells adapted for its function?

Biconcave disk shape
—> increases surface area
—> more oxygen carried - No nucleus
—> so it can contain more haemoglobin
How are white blood cells adapted to its function?
- Has receptors on membrane
—> recognises pathogens - Can change shape
—> engulfs pathogens
What does plasma do?
liquid that carries dissolved substances
What is the function of platelets?
small fragments of cells that helps blood clot after an injury
What is the function of arteries?
Carries blood AWAY FROM THE HEART
What is the function of veins?
Carries blood INTO the heart
What are the adaptations of arteries?
- Thick walls
—> withstand high pressure - Small lumen
—> reduces volume
What are the adaptations of veins?
- Contain valves
—> prevent back flow of blood - Large lumen
—> maximises blood flow
What are the adaptations of capillaries?
- One cell thick
—> short diffusion pathway - Permeable walls
—> substances can move past them
What is cellular respiration?
An exothermic reaction which occurs continuously in living cells to release energy for metabolic processes
What does fick’s law state?
Rate of diffusion is proportional to surface area and concentration difference
