SB1h Enzyme Activity Flashcards
Describe the effect of temperature on enzyme
activity.
Low temperature affect is molecules move slowly. substrate molecules take longer to fit into and react with the active site
At optimum it works the best
high temeprature causes change to active site, so can not hold substrate tightly
very high temperature, active site breaks up, and enzyme is denatured.
Describe the effect of substrate concentration on
enzyme activity
Increasing substrate reaction also increases rate of reaction to a point, once all enzymes are catalyzed, any substrate increased will have no effect.
Describe the effect of pH on enzyme activity
At very acidic and alkaline pH values the shape of the enzyme is altered so that it is no longer complementary to its specific substrate
Explain what is meant by the optimum
pH/temperature of an enzyme
temperature/pH which works at the best.
Calculate the rate of enzyme activity from
experimental data.

Explain why temperature, substrate concentration
and pH affect enzyme activity.
Substrate requires different temperatures, and pH
