Enzymes and nutrition Flashcards
Enzymes
Proteins. biological catalysts that control reactions in the body. they only work with one substrate
amalyse
Found in pancreas and salivary glands.
breaks down carbohydrates to sugars
lipase
found in pancreas, mouth, and stomach.
turns lipids into fatty acids and glycerol
protease
found in stomach, pancreas and small intestine.
turns proteins to amino acids
What enzymes do
some enzymes digest large molecules into smaller molecules. this happens in the gut where large food molecules are broken down so they can be absorbed to the blood
some enzymes synthesise larger molecules from smaller molecules. this is important as inside cells to support life processes and growth.
