What is a doctor centered style?
- A consultation style.
- The DR is authorative, Impersonal and dominating. (Whilst patient is passive)
- Focuses on establishing a link between symptoms and illness.
AIDS= Authoratative, Impersonal, Dominating
What do doctor-centered styles typically feature?
- Closed questions (that prompt short replies, do not encourge discussion).
What is a patient-centered style?
- A consultation style
- That is personal, less controlling and meaningful.
- Patient is an active part of the consultation
What do patient-centered styles typically feature?
- Open questions
- Avoids jargon
- Shares decision making

What is the Aim of the study?
- To compare the effectiveness of different consultation styles
- Such as directing and sharing by GPS
- On patient’s satisfaction.
What is the independent variable?
- Allocation to either a directing or sharing style consultation condition.
What is the dependent variable?
- The patients satisfaction level
- Immidiately after the consultation and 1 week later.
- Measured by a questionnare

- Independent measures design
- A set of cards was used to randomly allocate ppts to the directing or sharing style conditions.

What is a directing syle?
- When the doctor is authorative and dominating
- And tells the patient what is wrong and what they should do next.
What is the sharing style?
- When the doctor dicusses with the patient
- What they think might be wrong
- And both agree on the best course of action.
