Describe stage 1:
“The appointment system”
A
- The research was conducted by 1 GP during his surgery (across 4 month period).
- So, there was a full appointment system established. In which the patients were free to choose what DR they saw.

“Random Number Generator”
A
- A random number generator was used to select 4 patients for the study from each (surgery) appointment.

Describe stage 3: Greeting
A
- A stopwatch was started as soon as the patient entered the room.
- The consultation opened with a standard greeting with the patient describing their problem.

Describe stage 4:
“Set of cards”
A
- The GP was given a set of cards, that determined which style would be used.
- The set of cards were turned over, after the patient fully described their problem.

“Prompts”
A
- The set of cards also had prompts on them, which covered the 5 main parts of the consultation that had to be discussed..
- JDTPF were given in the allocated style.
They set of cards had to be checked to ensure all the parts were covered propely.

Describe stage 1:
The questionnaire (1)

- At the end of the consultation:
1) The duration was noted.
2) Patient asked to complete the questionnaire in the wating room and to bring it reception before leaving.

“Questionnaire (2)”
A
- A 2nd enveloped questionnaire with a stamped address and instructions
- Were given to the patients to send back after a week.

Describe stage 8:
“Independent Obsever”
A
- An independent observer analysed 40 tape recordings of the consultations.
- To confirm all apsects were covered in the consultation,
- The intended style was indentified correctly in 39/40 recordings.

What parts of the procedure was standardised?
A
- Ppt selection: Ppts were excluded if they were presented with life threatning conditions etc
- The prompts covered the same 5 parts of the consultation.
