Q

how does ampicilin kill bacteria?

A
  • inactivates transpeptidase which is the enzyme that cross linkes peptidoglycals in the cell wall
  • disrupts cell wall synthesis = cell lysis

Q

what is does the ampicillin resistance gene code for? what does this protein do?

A

codes for B-lactamse
- enzyme that cleaves a structural ring in ampicillin and results in loss of ampicillin function = cell walls can form

Q

how does B-lactamase work for satellite colonies?

A
  • secreted by bacteria: leaves bacteria & destroys ampicillin surrounding the colony of bacteria
  • allows non-transformed non-plasmid colonies (satellites) to form
