Satellite colonies Flashcards
1
Q
when are satellite colonies seen?
A
commonly with ampicillin resistance
2
Q
ampicilin is an antibiotic that is
A
baceriocidal (kills bacteria)
3
Q
how does ampicilin kill bacteria?
A
- inactivates transpeptidase which is the enzyme that cross linkes peptidoglycals in the cell wall
- disrupts cell wall synthesis = cell lysis
4
Q
what is does the ampicillin resistance gene code for? what does this protein do?
A
codes for B-lactamse
- enzyme that cleaves a structural ring in ampicillin and results in loss of ampicillin function = cell walls can form
5
Q
how does B-lactamase work for satellite colonies?
A
- secreted by bacteria: leaves bacteria & destroys ampicillin surrounding the colony of bacteria
- allows non-transformed non-plasmid colonies (satellites) to form
