What is Sarcoidosis?
- Abnormal collections of inflammatory cells forming granulomas.
- Usually begins in the lungs, skin or lymph nodes.
- Findings that make Sarcoidosis likely are… enlarged lymph nodes at the root of the lung on both sides, high blood calcium with a normal PTH level, or elevated levels of ACE in the blood.
- Exclude TB which presents similar symptoms .
What is Lofgren Syndrome?
It’s an acute form of Sarcoidosis characterised by the traid of:
- Erythema nodosum
- Bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy
- Arthralgia
In what group of people is Sarcoidosis more common?
Scandinavians, Women, 20-50.
What are some common symptoms of Sarcoidosis?
Fatigue, weight loss, arthralgia, arthritis, dry eyes, knee swelling, blurry vision, shortness of breath, a dry hacking cough, skin lesions.
What are some cutaneous symptoms of Sarcoidosis?
- Erythema Nodosum
- Noduli (small bumps)
- Granuloma annulare
- Lupus pernio (chronic raised indurated lesions on face)
What is the most common cardiac abnormality associated with Sarcoidosis?
Conduction abnormality (resulting in heart block)
What is the most common occular manifestation of Sarcoidosis?
Uveitis
What is Heerfordt Syndrome?
It’s a rare form of Sarcoidosis which includes:
- Uveitis
- Parotid gland swelling
- Chronic fever
- Palsy of facial nerves
What is the most common neurosarcoidosis sign?
Peripheral facial nerve palsy often bilateral
What is the most common blood anomaly indicative of Sarcoidosis?
Lymphopenia
