Define sarcoidosis
A
- Multisystem disorder
- Granulomatous disorder - accumulation of granulomas and T lymphocytes

What is the aetiology of sarcoidosis?
A
- Unknown cause
- 75% age between 20-40yrs
- Can affect all sexes, ages, races and places of origin
- Black Africans highest rates

What are the symptoms of sarcoidosis?
A
DEPENDS ON ORGAN INVOLVEMENT
Respiratory =
- Dry cough
- Chest pain
- Dyspnoea (usually progressive)
- Fatigue
- Malaise
- Weight loss

What are the sign of sarcoidosis?
A
- Lymphadenopathy
- Crackles on auscultation
- Weakness
- Erythema nodusom + bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy = pathogonomic

What are the investigations for sarcoidosis?
A
Blood
- Ca2+ = increased
- Serum ACE = increased (poorly specific but good disease monitoring)
Imaging
- CXR (bilateral lymphadenopathy, infiltrates, fibrosis)
- Echocardiogram

What is the management for sarcoidosis?
A
Majority do not need treatment
Persistent symptoms = steroids then slowly tapered down
Resistant symptoms = methotrexate/chloroquine
