Flemish & Walloons migrants were invited by authorities in Sandwich &
………….to help their declining towns grow
Canterbury
Sandwich had been an important port but ….
but its river mouth had
silted up so many ships went elsewhere
FHow is this migration similar to others like in the middle ages
Both got permission from Elizabeth I’s
council to invite skilled migrants : Sandwich
– Flemish; Canterbury,a little later,
Walloons.
Like Henry III & Edward III in Medieval
England, skilled cloth weavers were
encouraged to settle.
So religion, government invitation and
economics drove migration to Sandwich &
Canterbury.
Flemish migrants in Sandwich were successful. ……… were allowed
for their markets. By 1582 ,,,,,, ‘Strangers’ made up………% of the town.
