Penalty for disobeying the law or rules
Formal sanction meaning
Comes from the authorities such as the police

In the UK a custodial sentence can be a suspended between 14 days in two years long so they don’t go to prison

Found guilty but receive no punishment if no further offence is committed within a set time period
