Guidance Scheme
How missile system receives info necessary to derive correct steering direction
Guidance Laws
Relationship between the missile and target motion used to generate missile steering commands.
AKA: How the missile flight to the target.
Command Guidance Scheme
Ground system must track missile and target to calculate proper trajectory for missile to intercept target and relays steering commands to missile during flight
Semi Active Guidance Scheme
Missile homes in on energy reflected off of the target provided by an outside source
Uplink Aided Inertial Guidance Scheme
Ground system includes digital uplink to INS equipped missile. Ground system tracks target and sends target location to missile via datalink. Missile calculates its own location using INS and calculates course corrections to intercept target.
Used for midcourse guidance only
Seeker Aided Ground Guided/Track via Missile Guidance Scheme
Forms of guidance that combine aspects of command and semi active guidance schemes
SAGG: Ground system illuminates target and missile receives reflected energy from target. Missile does not generate own guidance commands, instead transmits raw date to ground sys IOT generate uplink guidance commands
Active Guidance Scheme
Missile contains source for illuminating target and receiver for detecting and homing in on energy reflected from target
Passive
Missile detects and homes in on the natural target emissions such as IR signature or emitted RF waves (all IR manpads are passive)
Gen 1 Manpads
Hot metal, rear aspect. No IRCCM (SA-7, CSA-3)
Gen2 Manpads
Plume tracker - all aspect, no IRCCM (SA-14, SA-6)
Gen3 Manpads
IRCCM (Flare rejection) (CSA-7, SA-18)
Gen4 manpads
Re-programmable processors (SA-29, CSA 10)
Gen5 Manpads
Imaging Seeker (QW-4)
MIR
Max range a missile can intercept a target - may be limited by factors such as max time of flight, self destruct timer, uplink timing
MRIR
max range system designed to intercept target where fire control computer will recommend a launch solution to operator and is usually manufacturers advertised max range
Probability of Kill (PsubK)
Statistical probability that a weapon will detonate close enough to target w/ enough effectiveness to destroy it
