Missiles Flashcards
Ballistic Missile definition:
Propelled by rocket engine for first part of flight, rest of the flight unpowered missile follows arcing trajectory w/ small adjustments being made by guidance mechanism
Cruise Missile Definition:
Propelled by air breathing engine that provides almost continuous propulsion and remains in atmosphere for its flight path
Types of Midcourse Missile Guidance
Radar: Receive commands from ground station
INS: Uses measurement devices to calculate the missiles location due to acceleration put on it after leaving a known position
Satellite: Uses GNSS to guide missile
Types of Terminal Missile Guidance
Radar: Active or passive
IR/IIR
EO/TV
Types of Guidance - Air to Air missiles (AAM)
Semi Active Homing: AI radar illuminates target, missile calls guidance based on receiving reflected energy.
Active Homing: At a certain point, missile goes active, transmitting and receiving energy independently from AI radar.
IR Homing: Missile guided toward IR target signature.
Passive (ARH): Missile guided toward target emitted radio frequency.
Circular Error Probable (CEP)
Radius of a circle, centered on desired impact point, within which 50% of the impact points are expected.
