Sampling Techniques Flashcards
Random sampling- definition
Random number table to choose place or person to be sampled
Random sampling- best used when
Trying to avoid bias
Random sampling- advantages
Avoid bias, can be used for large sample populations
Random sampling- disadvantages
Can lead to poor representation of an area, may not be enough time to speak to everyone
Systematic sampling- definition
Samples chosen in a regular way, evenly distributed in a space, at regular time intervals, regularly numbered
Systematic sampling- best used when
Making sure to cover whole area
Systematic sampling- advantages
Good coverage of all area, easier than random b/c sampling evenly spread out
Systematic sampling- disadvantages
More biased tan random, can lead to over-under representation of a pattern
Stratified sampling- definition
Used when population or area studied is made of sub-sets of known size
Stratified sampling- best used when
Covering all different groups fairly
Stratified sampling- advantages
If aize of subsets known its very representative, comaorisons between sub groups
Stratified sampling- disadvantages
Size of groups must be knows, may be rude to adk about spcertain things, depending on time of day certain groups might not be present
