Sampling organisms (Required Practical) Flashcards
1
Q
what is random sampling
A
when you use a quadrant that can be various different lengths
2
Q
how do you estimate the total population of daisies in a field
A
- put 2 tape measure at a right angle ans should measure 20m in length
- get 2 bags with each bag containing the numbers 1 to 20
- work in a group of 3 where person 1 picks a number and for example it is 8 they move to the 8m point of the tap measure
- repeat this for person 2
- person 3 will then place the quadrant at 8 to 12
- the students then count the number or daisies in the quadrate
- repeat this process 9 times
3
Q
how do you estimate the total number of daises in the whole field
A
total population size = total area number of organisms
———— x of that specied counted
area sampled in sample
4
Q
how can we use a transect line to see how the number of daisies change from the tree outwards
A
- put the tape measure at the tree in a diagonal line
- use a quadrat to count the number of daisies at the start of the transect
- record the light intensity by using a light meter or an app
- move the quadrat 1m down the line and repeat the measurement and do this until you reach the end of the tap measure
