Q

what happends in the menstrual cycle

A

every 28 days ovulation happens (overy releases an egg)

in preparation for this the uterus lining becomes thick and spongy

and the egg goes to the uterus (if sperm is present the egg will fertilize If this happens the egg will implant to the uterus wall and develop into a baby)

if the egg doesn’t get fertilized then both the egg and the uterus lining are released this is called a period

Q

what are the 4 key hormones for the menstrual cycle

A

Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) causes an egg to mature in the ovary.

Luteinising hormone (LH) causes this egg to be released, in other words ovulation.

Oestrogen (produced by the ovary) and progesterone are involved in maintaining the uterus lining, encase the egg is fertilized and implants.

Q

what are the steps the menstrual cycle

A
  1. Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) is released by the pituitary gland.
  2. FSH travels in the blood to the ovaries where it causes an egg to mature.
  3. At the same time, FSH triggers the ovaries to make o estrogen.
  4. O estrogen causes the lining of the uterus to become thick.
  5. O estrogen also stops the pituitary gland from releasing any more FSH.
  6. Instead, the pituitary gland now releases luteinisin hormone LH
  7. LH triggers ovulation in other words the mature egg is released.
  8. Once the ovary has released its egg, the ovary now produces the hormone progesterone.
  9. Progesterone stops the pituitary land from releasing FSH and LH. (That is to prevent any more eggs from maturing or being released)
  10. Progesterone keeps the lining of the uterus thick encase a fertilized egg implants. (if fertilization does not take place then the level of progesterone falls)
  11. The uterus lining and the egg are now released and the woman has a period.
