SAMPLING METHODS EVAL Flashcards
1
Q
Random Sampling Method- Definition
A
- Every individual in the target popu has equal chance of selction. Often done through random number generators.
2
Q
Random Sampling Method- Strengths
A
- Representative: More likely to produce a representative sample. Thus, improving generalisability of results.
- Reduced selection bias: Everyone has equal chance at selection.
3
Q
Random Sampling Method- Weaknesses?
A
- Time consuming: Slow, complex process (especially in large popu), non response issues, , difficulties accessing info on a population
- Practicality: Bias may occur due to chance
4
Q
Volunter Sampling Definition
A
- Ppts choose to join the study
- Or are invited through ads, notices
5
Q
Volunteer Sampling- Strengths
A
- Convient: Reduces recruitment effort
- Ideal ppts: Ppts are often more engaged, interested, willing to return for repeat testing. Leading to high quality of data collected.
6
Q
Volunteer Sample- Weaknesses
A
- Volunteer bias: Specific traits (motivated helpful), exposed to the request. Thus= unrepresentative sample.
7
Q
Opportunity Sample- Definition
A
- Ppts are selected based on availability, willingness to particpate or proximity to researchers.
8
Q
Opportunity Sample- Strength
A
- Convient/ quick: Reduced recruitment effort. Cost effective.
- Larger sample: Researcher can gather a large number of ppts (who are available)
9
Q
Opportunity Sample- Weaknesses
A
- Selection Bias: Ppts are selected based on convenience, and not randomness. They may lack diversity or share characteristics= unrepresentative sample.
