EXPERIMENTAL DESIGNS Flashcards
1
Q
Independent measures design?
A
An experimental design in which
* Different ppts are used for each condition.
2
Q
Name 2 strengths of an independent measures design.
A
- NO order effects: Ppts exposed to 1 level of the iv
- NO Demand characteristics: Ppts are exposed to 1 level of the iv, less likely to guess experimental aims and alter behaviour.
3
Q
Name 2 weaknesses of an independent measures design
A
- Ppts variables: Ppts differences in each group may introduce variability.
2.Practical: Needs more ppts (smaller samples)
4
Q
Define repeated measures design
A
An experimental design in which
* The same ppts take part in all levels of the iv.
5
Q
Name 2 strengths of an repeated measures design.
A
- Reduces ppts variables: Reduces an indiviudal differences that could affect DV.
- Pratical: Fewer ppts are needed (v good if ppts are at risk or hard to find)
6
Q
Name 2 weaknesses of repeated measures design
A
- Order effects: ppts may become fatigued or improve with practice as they progress through conditions
- Demand characteristics: More likely to guess experimental aims
7
Q
What is a matched pairs design?
A
An experimental design in which
* Ppts are matched based on a given KEY characteristic, and each member of the pair performs in different condition.
8
Q
2 Weakesses. Matched pairs design
A
- Difficulty: FINDING ppts with closely matched characteristics.
- Small sample: More ppts needed as each condition needs a seperate group/ limited availability
9
Q
2 strengths. Matched pairs design
A
- No ppts variables: As ppts are matched on key characteristics
- No order effects: Exposed to 1 level of the iv
