Sampling Methods Flashcards
What is Random Sampling?
- A sample generated by identifying a list of the entire target population and randomly selecting participants from this list
- each member of the target population has an equal chance of being selected
AO3: Random Sampling
- High population validity
- Low experimenter bias
- Sometimes low population validity
- Impractical
What is Stratified Sampling?
-A sample generated by identifying a list of the entire target population as well as the characteristics which are important to the research, before randomly selecting a ratio that reflects the group
AO3: Stratified sampling
- High population validity
- Low experimenter bias
- Sometimes low population validity
- Impractical and difficult to achieve
What is Systematic sampling?
-A sample generated by identifying a list of the entire target population before specifically selecting every nth participant
AO3: Systematic sampling
- High population validity
- Low experimenter bias
- Sometimes low population validity
- Impractical
What is Opportunity sampling?
-A sample generated when participants take part in research based on their availability at the time of the study
AO3: Opportunity sampling
- Practical
- Ethical
- Low population validity
- High experimenter bias
What is Volunteer sampling?
-A sample generated when participants self-select or volunteer to take part in research, normally inn response to an advert
AO3: Volunteer sampling
- Practical
- Ethical
- Low population validity
- High volunteer bias
